This site was constructed using Microsoft Visual Basic version 4 with remote automation, Visual Basic 3 with pepperwhitestreet.vbx for map generation ,and Microsoft Access for total data storage. The Web Server is the Microsoft Internet Information Server running on WindowsNT. There is an additional computer running Windows 95, and it hosts the Server Side Mapping Engine. The maps are created on the fly, using Pepperwhite Street VBX. A full resolution map is generated, but in the interest of reducting download time we are compressing them, causing some loss of resolution. Each map is about 17-20K in size after compression. Before compression they are about 280K so we are gaining a substantial performance increase for a minimal quality reduction. For more mapping information contact Tony at Pepperwhite. The original photographs were obtained with 4x5 color film negatives from fixed wing aircraft. The latitude and longitude information is collected via a GPS receiver and a Visual Basic program that captures a record each time the camera is clicked.
Upon arrival the locations are adjusted as necessary and the images are scanned into 60-75K jpeg files. When viewed in the web browser, the photos are reduced to fit the screen. You can view these images in any jpeg capable viewer by finding the file in your cache directory. The file name will be the negative number (without the dot) on the top of the page, followed by .jpg. It will look like this 9604002.jpg. Sort by decending data and it will be at the top. We now have an image viewer available here at the bottom of this page. The whole batch is then dumped into the stock photo database and are instantly available online.
